for the VNP Entrance Examination

The VNP’s Quantitative Skills Assessment resembles the question typology in the quantitative section of the GRE test except for geometry. This section evaluates the candidate’s ability to perform basic math computation, understand elementary mathematical concepts, and solve problems with quantitative methods.

Following the GRE format, the question content of this section can be categorized into 4 major areas: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. The math concepts in each area and their examples are as follows (Note that the examples have been extracted from official GRE preparation material by ETS).

1. Arithmetic

This content area includes concepts such as integers, fractions, exponents and roots, decimals, real numbers, ratio, and percent.

1.1 Integers

Let S be the set of all positive integers n such that n2 is a multiple of both 24 and 108. Which of following integers are divisors of every integer n in S?

Indicate all such integers.

  1. 12
  2. 24
  3. 36
  4. 72
1.2 Fractions

Evaluate the following: (3/4 +1/7)(-2/5)

1.3 Exponents and roots

Quantity A: (3-1)/(4-1)

Quantity B: 4/3

A. Quantity A > Quantity B

B. Quantity A = Quantity B

C. Quantity A < Quantity B

  • 1.4 Decimals

At a fund-raising event, 43 pariticipants donated $60 each, 21 pariticipants donated $80 each, and 16 participants donated $100 each. What was the average (arithmetic mean) donation per participant, in dollars?

(Official Guide, p.132)

1.5 Real numbers

Which of the following numbers is farthest from the number 1 on the number line?

A. -10

B. -5

C. 0

D. 5

E. 10

1.6 Ratio

In year Y, the population of Colorado was approximately half that of New Jersey, and the land area of Colorado was approximately 14 times that of New Jersey. The population density (number of persons per unit of land area) of Colorado in year Y was approximately how many times the population density of New Jersey?

A. 1/28

B. 1/14

C. 1/7

D. 1/4

E. 1/2

1.7 Percent

Example 1: 15 is 30% of which number?

Example 2: A particular stock is valued at $40 per share. If the value increases by 20 percent and then decreases by 25 percent, what will be the value of the stock per share after the decrease?

(GRE Math Review, p.30)

2. Algebra

This content area includes algebraic expressions, rules of exponents, solving linear equations, solving quadratic equations, solving linear inequalities, functions, applications, coordinate geometry, and graphs of functions.

  • Algebraic expressions

  • Rules of exponents

  • Solving linear equations

  • Solving quadratic equations

  • Solving linear inequalities

  • Functions

  • Applications

  • Coordinate geometry

  • Graphs of functions

 3. Data analysis

This content area includes methods for presenting data, numerical methods for describing data, counting methods, probability, data interpretation, and distributions of data, random variables, and probability distributions.

  • Methods for presenting data

  • Numerical methods for describing data

  • Counting methods

  • Probability

  • Distributions of data, random variables, and probability distributions.

  • Data interpretation

In addition to question typology based on the quantitative content, the way the test item is verbalized and contextualized (i.e., the question’s format). It is important to note that the format of the questions plays a crucial role in question design and adds to the candidate’s problem solving and quantitative reasoning.

To evaluate the candidate’s quantitative reasoning, the math questions are formatted in four ways: quantitative comparisons, single-selection multiple-choice, multiple-selection multiple-choice, and numeric entry. Below are samples of each type of question from ETS official website. As seen in the two practice tests in the Official Guide to GRE, among these four question types, quantitative comparisons often account for 36% of the math section, while numeric entry questions are much less common, with 10% of the questions requiring numeric input.

  • Quantitative comparisons:
  • Single-selection multiple-choice
  • Multiple-selection multiple-choice
  • Numeric entry
